Childcare IdeaWave Campaign

Whether you're a parent, or you're planning to have children in the next few years, your opinion about childcare on campus matters. What specific ideas or suggestions can you provide to ensure that UC San Diego meets campus childcare needs now, and in the future?

Campaign Length

May 23 through June 4, 2018

Audience

UC San Diego faculty, students and staff

Background

In an effort to address childcare considerations within the context of the campus Strategic Plan and the 2018 campus Long Range Development Plan update, childcare services have been identified as a top priority. These services provide direct and meaningful support for the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, students and staff. Expansion of campus childcare services is based on the current transformation of the UC San Diego campus, which will accommodate the anticipated enrollment growth up to 40,000 students in the next five years.

The Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) and the Mesa Child Development Center (MCDC) are owned and operated by the university. Programs are open to the children of full-time UC San Diego faculty, students and staff, as well as a limited number of non-UC San Diego affiliates. Services include health screenings. Both centers provide high-quality care and learning opportunities that serve as the foundation for future academic success.

  • ECEC has 210 students age 2 months to 5 years old with high adult to child ratios. It is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and functions under the California Department of Education contract requirements. Developmental programs are based on the assumption that children learn by doing, especially when activities are self-initiated and self-regulated.
  • MCDC offers full- and part-time flexible care for 72 children age 3 months to 5 years old in mixed aged groups. Curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, which takes an approach of surrounding the child in socially and culturally diverse environments and encourages participation in activities that stimulate learning through doing, especially while developing relationships with others.
